Family Biography

Hendrix Builders was founded by Jean and Walter Hendrix in the mid-70s after Walter’s successful career in industrial equipment sales and residential grading. Walter obtained both his commercial and residential builder’s licenses for the installation of community infrastructure and residential construction.

Jean and Walter’s son, Steve Hendrix, joined the family business in the early 80s after graduating from the University of South Carolina with a degree in finance and real estate. Soon after, Steve obtained his Residential Builder’s license and his real estate broker’s license. It wasn’t long before Steve was recognized as both the Builder of the Year and the Marketing Director of the Year by the Home Builders Association of Greater Columbia (now the BIA of Central South Carolina).

In time, they were joined by Steve’s wife Althea—a graduate of Newberry College—as well as their son Clayton—a graduate of USC. Althea manages our accounting department, and Clayton serves as our field manager for construction and forestry activities. We’d also like to highlight two of our longtime employees: Lona Parker, who serves as our office manager, and Frank James (aka Lightning), who has worked with us for more than five decades.

In 2020, Jean Hendrix passed away, leaving behind a lifetime legacy of impressive accomplishments at work, at church, and in the community. She also leaves behind a testament of love for her husband and family. We are honored to continue Jean’s legacy.
